Using Unique Federal
Laboratory Facilities and Capabilities |
|
Specialized
government facilities often have unique capabilities
that are not otherwise available in the private sector.
In fact, some federal facilities are dedicated to
providing equipment, expertise, information, and other
types of assistance to outside organizations. Industry
access to such facilities is often available on a
cost-reimbursable basis, and the information acquired
generally belongs to the company. When the information
is also of interest to the government or the scientific
community at large, industry may be able to negotiate
different terms under a Cooperative Research and
Development Agreement (CRADA) or other such agreement.
|
| |
|
In addition, some federal
laboratories have provisions for undertaking sponsored
research. This involves industry reimbursing the
laboratory for work done at the facility. In such cases,
the work carried out must require unique capabilities
that are not available in the private sector. |

|
|
The
expertise, facilities and equipment capabilities of
the Federal labs in the Mid-Atlantic Region, is too
vast to easily capture and comprehend. The NIH
alone has about 17 million ft2 of
laboratory and office space filled with equipment
and thousands of personnel working on hundreds of
projects. The following pages reproduce some of the
information supplied by some of the individual labs
regarding their capabilities. It is not a
comprehensive treatment, but may begin to provide a
sense of the assets. Click on each item for
more information. |
